Murwillumbah Community Centre

History

Origins of the Murwillumbah Community Centre

The centre was started in 1974 at the hospital, in response to perceived community needs by a group of concerned business people. It evolved into a Neighbourhood Centre located in King Street under the name "Murwillumbah Community Aid".

Evolution

Because of the similarity to other welfare agency names, the name was changed to Murwillumbah Community Support Centre. The location was changed to the north of the railway station when land was leased from the Railway Authorities. Two older railway buildings were moved to the site and renovated to provide emergency accommodation for four males and one family and two offices for administration.

Current location

On the 23 October 1996 the centre relocated to its current location in Knox Park, which is provided rent free from the Tweed Shire Council. On the 17th June 2004 the name was changed to the Murwillumbah Community Centre Inc.

Alongside the Centre in Knox Park is a skate park and public toilets. The Centre is centrally located in the heart of the CBD.

Usage

The Centre is open 4 days a week - Monday to Thursday. It currently services approx 12,500 community members a year, whom access a variety of information or participate in one of our services or programs.
